Stop what you are doing! Sorry for yet another interruption.

Rick Schwier just referred to an interesting article which appeared in the Seattle Times titled “Life Interrupted“. It brings up an interesting concern about how people today are being bombarded by digital interruptions (e.g., email, blogs, Blackberries, IM, etc.), and these interruptions are keeping us from doing our work, from fully participating in our lives and are causing cognitive overload (amongst other things). I think it’s a real concern. I’m a known sufferer from this condition, but have made attempts to cut out as many of these digital intrusions as possible (e.g., no cellphone, limited IM, email at scheduled times a day). In fact, I feel guilty blogging this … although I justify it as part of my self-therapy.

I am also seeing this trend in a lot of my students. I teach in a computer lab, and find the use of MSN (IM), the checking of email and online games to be appalling (hey … check me out, I’m teaching up here). It’s something I try to discourage, but also something I have been planning to bring in as a larger ethical, professional and social issue next semester.

Another article worth reading which peripherally addresses this issue is titled “Her So-Called Digital Life“, recently from Wired Magazine.

Update:
Stephen Downes just posted an article titled “Generation Raised With Internet Grows Up“. I think this follows a similar meme stream.

How to Create Recursive Animation: This is tight!

Boing Boing featured a neat example of recursive animation done in Flash. Click here to take a look. Also, if you are interested in doing one like this yourself, here’s an additional link to a how-to tutorial. If I ever get to the end of this semester, I may just try this as an Xmas gift to myself. I am not sure if it is useful, but it certainly looks cool.

Hmmm … speaking of ‘cool’, Safire’s New York Times article “Kiduage” just reminded me of how behind the times I am in my contemporary use of my slang. You better read it, aiiigghhht. Fo’ shizzle.

December Already?

Oh my … I think I am in shock that December is already here and I have so much to do before the new semester starts. Christmas will be extra special this year with the new addition to my family. Ahhhh … gotta show her off.

Oh yah … this is my first Flickr post. Flickr is just an excellent photo-sharing tool … and if you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it. It’s easy to post to my blog right from Flickr … just like I am doing now.

MSN Spaces – MS, Where Have You Been?

There was a buzz today on the new MSN Spaces blogging service revealed today by Microsoft. I setup my own account, but then quickly dismantled it considering how poor it looked. I noticed Steven Downes wasn’t too impressed, and others at BoingBoing complained of its avoidance of W3C standards, its restrictive terms of use and as well, the the built in censoring. In the year that ‘blog’ was the most used term on the web, MS seems to have still missed the point.

It’s not the first time. A couple of recent, short articles examine Microsoft’s absence on the innovation circuit. “Why Microsoft Still Hasn’t A Clue About Innovation‘ and “What Money Can’t Buy” are worth a read if you are interested why releases such as MSN Spaces always seem a couple of bucks short. Although, being a few billion dollars short of Bill’s account, who am I to criticize?
