Yammer: Organizational Microblogging

I ran across Yammer tonight. From the demo video found on the home page, Yammer looks much like Twitter but your potential network is defined by your organization’s domain (like Google Sites). I see later that Yammer is billed as “Twitter for Enterprise“.

So I signed up using my uregina.ca domain. Looks like I’m the first and only one there. One is a lonely number when you are dealing with social networks. :-(

I really like the concept of Yammer, and am already thinking about how I could use it as a communications tool in my next class, or actually use it with my colleagues. Wow, that could be really useful!

  1. I’ll have to check it out. Utterz is also supposed to be coming out with something similar this week. I’m looking for something to embed on a WP blog that allows multiple people to post from multiple devices. I may be dreaming.

  2. Hmmm interesting. A few questions:

    * Do you yammer yourself? Do you reply? Do you direct yammer yourself? Do you follow yourself? If so does that create an infinite loop?
    * Do you hear a tree falling?

    Seriously, sort of, looks worth sniffing at. Would want to know if it is completely private to can it be local write but world read? does it do RSS? does it have APIs for other services to post?

  3. @Alan: I’ve asked the Yammer people to reply to this post, hopefully they can let us know if there are those types of options. I don’t see them in the admin panel.

    Also, if you want a managed domain, note that it would cost $1 per user per month. I have been just digging around and looking at the options.

  4. I’m in the same boat as far as being the only person in my school division to sign up. I’ve sent out some invites so we’ll see who responds.

    How about an EdTech Posse yammer for us and all listeners? Hmmm …

  5. Hi everyone, I’m Noah from the Yammer team. Thanks for the interest in Yammer. To address some of Alan’s questions:

    Yammer is private to users who share a confirmed email address from the same domain. So the Uregina network is private to users with a confirmed @uregina.ca email address.

    We do have a links page, and are working on RSS.

    We also have a fully functional API. We haven’t released it to the public yet, but expect to soon.
